Our Sun is a 4.5 billion-year-old yellow dwarf star that sits at the centre of our solar system. It is a superheated ball of hydrogen and helium gas. At a distance of 150 million kilometres from Earth, it powers life by providing light and heat. Its gravity holds the solar system together, keeping everything from the biggest planets to the smallest bits of debris in orbit around it.
