Continuously erupting since 1983, Kilauea in Hawaii is the world’s most active volcano. It is a shield volcano – a type of volcano named for its shape, which resembles a warrior’s shield seen from the side. Due to their runny lava and frequent eruptions, shield volcanoes are much wider than they are tall.
