Number (place value): Top Trump Monkeys

2 - The Problem

The Problem

Logan loves playing Top Trumps, so he began to create his own set of Marvellous Monkeys Top Trumps cards (see opposite). To complete the cards, Logan needs to give each monkey species a rating out of 100 that reflects its weight, speed, length and life span in comparison to other monkey species.

Can you complete Logan’s six Tom Trumps cards by using the information in the table below?

How do your ratings compare to a friend’s?

Under certain conditions, a howler’s call can be heard from about 3 miles (4.8 kilometres) away. It is the loudest of all the monkey species and one of the loudest land animals on the planet. Howlers call to let others know where their territory is, alerting them to stay away.

Visualising the Problem and Getting Started

You’ll notice that Logan has completed the proboscis monkey card. Discuss with a partner the ratings that Logan has given this fascinating monkey species.

Mila said, “The squirrel monkey and the pygmy marmoset are the lightest of the 6 monkey species. I will give the squirrel monkey a rating of 30/100 and the pygmy marmoset a rating of 40/100.”

Do you agree with Mila’s ratings? How do you know?
