Number (multiplication and division): Wild Isles Animals
The Problem
Inspired by her love for wildlife, mathematics and music, Miss Starling wrote a song. You can see her song opposite. It features some of the animals that were on show in the Wild Isles trailer and the number of each animal species that she had seen for herself whilst travelling around the UK.
(Teacher note: If you know the words to the 12 Days of Christmas carol, you might like to sing the lines opposite to the cumulative part (four calling birds, three French hens, two turtle doves and a partridge in a pear tree) of this song.
Miss Starling recorded a total of 108 animal legs in her song!
How many foraging badgers did Miss Starling see?
Did you know?
The British Isles are home to around 90 species of mammal in the land, air and sea. The largest mammal is the red deer. Mature males can weigh as much as 180 kg. The UK’s smallest mammal is the pygmy shrew. It can weigh as little as 2.4 g!
Visualising the Problem and Getting Started
After being given a copy of the song, Gracie said, “The first thing that I will do is cross out lines 4, 6 & 11.”
Why might Gracie do this? Do you agree with her?
