Number (multiplication and division): Forest Piglets

2 - The Problem

The Problem

In the Forest of Dean, 5 female wild boar have each given birth to a litter of piglets. You can see an illustration of the wild boar and the forest opposite. Each litter (labelled A – E) consists of 4 to 6 piglets.

If there is a total of 24 wild boar piglets in this area of forest, how many piglets could there be in each litter?

Is there more than one solution to this problem? How will you prove that you have found all possible solutions?

Did you know?

Pigs are excellent swimmers! In the wild, they will happily cross water to seek new food sources, escape danger or find a better habitat.

Rayan said, “I think it is possible for 4 of the litters to have the same number of piglets in them.”

Do you agree with Rayan? How do you know?
