Number (fractions): Riotous Rainforest

2 - The Problem

The Problem

In a small area of the Amazon rainforest, a scientist observed and recorded a number of different animal types. You can see the different types of animal (mammal, bird, amphibian, reptile and insect) and the number of each type that she saw in the picture opposite. As a keen mathematician, who loved fractions, she wrote some mathematical descriptions about what she saw on some cards. These are shown below.

Using the picture, your knowledge of fractions and a fraction wall, can you sort the cards into two piles to show which cards are true and which cards are false?

Did you know?

Unlike pet cats, jaguars love water. They are confident swimmers, known to cross large rivers. They are at the top of the food chain and will often take on large prey such as caiman.

Visualising the Problem and Getting Started

Dimash said, “Over one half of the animals in the picture are birds.” Do you agree with Dimash? How do you know?
