2 - The Problem

The Problem

A small flock of 5 pelicans were flying in a v formation. You can see the age of each pelican in the picture opposite.

Mo the scientist noticed that the two arms of the v had the same pelican combined-age total.

Which pelicans might be flying in each arm?

Can you convince a friend that you have found all possible solutions?

Did you know?

Geese also fly in a V formation. Bar-headed geese are famous for flying extremely high. During their spring migration, they have been seen flying over the peak of Mount Everest at heights of almost 30,000 feet!

Visualising the Problem and Getting Started

Can you identify the pelicans in each arm by using a trial and improvement approach?
