Measurement (money): The Fossil Stall

2 - The Problem

The Problem

Best friends, Molly and Zachary, live in Lyme Regis – a seaside town that is located on the Jurassic Coast. For Lifeboat Week, and to raise money for the RNLI (The Royal National Lifeboat Institution), they decided to make and sell some crochet ammonites and belemnites.

They agreed to sell each ammonite for £2 and each belemnite for 50p (see picture opposite).

If Molly and Zachary raised £15 from the sale of their crochet fossils, how many belemnites and how many ammonites did they sell?

There is more than one answer. How do you know if you have found all possible solutions?

Did you know?

Ammonites became extinct around the same time the dinosaurs disappeared. They are distant relatives of the modern nautilus. Like the nautilus, an ammonite was able to move up and down in the ocean by pumping water in and out of its shell.
