Geometry (angles): Charlotte's Web

2 - The Problem

The Problem

A barn spider called Charlotte began weaving a new web. She has just finished making the important Y shape from silk. You can see this Y shape in the picture opposite.

If you wrote the name ‘Charlotte’ in capital letters, how many right angles, obtuse angles and acute angles would you be able to find?

Discuss with a partner how you would keep track of the different types of angle.

Did you know?

In addition to building their webs, spiders will also use silk to build egg sacs and to wrap up their prey. It also makes an excellent safety line when needing to escaping a predator, and some spiders travel great distances through the air on silk parachutes!

Visualising the Problem and Getting Started

Suraya said, “So far, Charlotte has created a right angle.” Do you agree with Suraya? Discuss your answer with a partner.
