Geometry (2D & 3D shapes): Nest Box

2 - The Problem

The Problem

Starlings class decided that they would make a nest box, which would be positioned in a quiet area of their school grounds (well away from curious cats and foxes). They found a photograph of a nest box design that they thought they could make (see opposite). You’ll notice that the nest box has been constructed from different pieces of wood, which have been fixed together.

Before they could start sawing their wood into the correct shapes and sizes, the children first needed to draw all of the pieces.

What do you think the pieces of wood looked like? How accurately are you able to draw them?

Did you know?

Most songbirds, such as the blue tit, robin and wren, are born with their eyes closed and without feathers.

How many pieces of wood are needed to make this nest box?

Jibril said, “This nest box is made from from 4 rectangular pieces of wood.” Do you agree with Jibril? How do you know?
