Clip Description

Periodical cicadas spend most of their lives underground as nymphs, feeding on tree roots. When the time comes for them to emerge as adults, usually in spring or early summer, they do so in massive numbers.

In this fascinating clip, over a billion cicada nymphs are on the march having spent 17 years underground. Above ground each nymph climbs out of,its external skeleton, becoming a winged adult. How long does this transformation take? Watch the clip to find out.
