When feeling threatened, ants can defend themselves in a variety of ways. They have a special mouthpart called a mandible that can slice other insects in half. Some species of ant have poisonous stingers, while other species spray formic acid at their attackers.
Use PAWS and column addition to solve the following word problem.
There were 235,345 wood ants in a nest. Of these, 23,564 ants were defending the nest from another ant colony by spraying formic acid at them. A further 4,628 ants were defending the nest by biting and stinging their attackers.
