2 - The Problem

The Problem

River chub live in the Mississippi river. In one area of the river their nests have a diameter of 1m. The stretch of river is 21m long and 11m wide.

There is a gap of 1m between each nest and a gap of 1m on each bank.

1) What is the area of this stretch of river?

2) What is the area taken up by the nests?

3) What is the area of the rest of the river?

4) How many nests can fit into this area?

The Mississippi River is the second longest river in North America, flowing 3,766km from its source at Lake Itasca through the centre of the USA to the Gulf of Mexico.

Scintillating Sentences

Jamal said, “If the river was 11m long and 7m wide there would be 15 nests.”

Do you agree with Jamal? How do you know?
