Clip Description

Spiders and scorpions belong to a group of animals called arachnids. All arachnids have 8 jointed legs. Some scientists think that having so many legs is a survival strategy. If a spider or scorpion loses a leg, it can still use its remaining legs to move quickly and escape a predator. Did you know that spiders and scorpions don’t have ears? To hear, they ‘pick up’ vibrations through the tiny hairs that cover their legs.

In this fascinating clip, Portia, a spider-eating jumping spider, attempts to catch another arachnid that is three times her size. This proves tricky, as the larger spider is venomous and surrounded by a sticky web. However, Portia is super smart. Which of her many superpowers will she use to catch her prey? Watch the clip to find out.
