Column subtraction: Lesson 1: dolphins
Learning Objective
We are learning how to subtract a 2-digit number from a 3-digit number using column subtraction (with one exchange, but not exchanging across more than one place value).
Context: dolphins
Clip Description
There are 42 species of dolphin. Like whales and porpoises, dolphins are mammals. Although they can stay underwater for between eight and ten minutes, they must come to the surface to breathe air. They are widely considered to be the second most intelligent of all animals after humans.
In this fascinating clip, over 2,000 spinner dolphins have gathered to rest in a Brazilian island’s sheltered bay. These remarkable dolphins are so named because of their ability to leap high out of the water and spin before landing with a loud splash. Scientists think that the spinning and splashing may help the dolphins scare away predators such as tiger sharks.
