Writing Activities: Year 6

American crocodile

With its narrow, tapered snout and exposed teeth, the prehistoric-looking American crocodile is one of the largest species of crocodile in the world, reaching lengths of up to 20 feet.

In this clip, we will learn about the crocodile’s connections with the ancient world, and how it has remained largely unchanged since the time when dinosaurs roamed the Earth.

Literacy Idea

Read the poem ‘The Crocodile’ by Lewis Carol at poets.org.

How do you interpret the crocodile in the poem – a sinister, devious monster, or a misunderstood creature happily greeting his fishy friends?

Use your interpretation as inspiration for writing your own poem about a crocodile!

You could include the following details:

  • Detailed descriptions of the crocodile and its surroundings
  • Metaphors and similes
  • Powerful adjectives
  • Rhyme

Wider Curriculum Idea

Make your own crocodile puppet from learnenglishkids.britishcouncil.org  (don’t worry if you don’t have a printer – just carefully draw the template by hand), and put on a puppet show for people at home. Use your show as an opportunity to share what you have learnt about crocodiles.
