Clip Description
A sponge is a strange animal that can be found on the ocean floor. Unlike most animals, it has no heart, brain, mouth or muscles. Unable to move from place to place, a sponge gets the food that it needs to survive by filtering seawater. The water is drawn in through the numerous tiny holes (pores) that cover its unusually-shaped body.
In this fascinating clip, we learn how a pair of shrimps have spent their entire lives inside a sponge. They were swept into the sponge when they were just tiny larvae. Now that they are fully grown, they are too big to be swept out through any of the sponge’s pores. However, being trapped inside a sponge does have some advantages. What do you think these might be?
