Clip Description
Nile crocodiles are known for their ‘indiscriminate’ diets. Whilst these cold-blooded killers mainly eat fish, they will eat almost anything that crosses their path – zebras, wildebeests and even humans! (It is estimated that up to 200 humans die each year in the jaws of this immensely powerful creature.) However, despite their fearsome reputation, these crocodilians are very caring parents. They will ferociously guard their eggs until they hatch, and will often roll the eggs gently in their mouths to help hatching babies emerge.
In this fascinating clip, a Nile monitor lizard is determined to unearth and devour the eggs of a Nile crocodile. Whilst this would seem foolhardy, the much smaller reptile seems to know full well what the croc’s Achilles’ heel is. What do you think is a Nile crocodile’s weakness once it is out of the water?
