Clip Description
Sea snakes (also known as coral reef snakes) are found in the shallow coastal regions of the Indian Ocean, and in warmer parts of the Pacific Ocean. They evolved from snakes that lived on the land. Although sea snakes still have some of the behaviour and traits of their ancestors, most have completely lost the ability to move along the ground. All of these aquatic reptiles (of which there are 69 known species) are poisonous. The most poisonous one is the beaked sea snake. Just 3 drops of its venom would be enough to kill eight humans!
In this fascinating clip, we see just how well sea snakes have adapted to their marine environment. How do you think their bodies will differ to their land-living cousins? Watch the clip to find out.
