Clip Description

Tarpons are large tropical fish. There are two species – one which is native to the Atlantic and the other to the Indo-Pacific Oceans. Fossil research shows they have been swimming in our oceans since prehistoric times and each fish can live over fifty years.

In this fascinating clip, deep in a coral cave, two-metre-long tarpons hunt huge shoals of silversides. These mighty carnivores swallow their prey whole, their cavernous jaws creating a suction effect when they strike. What other adaptations make these fish such successful hunters? Watch the clip to find out.
