With a wingspan between 55cm and 70cm, the sparrowhawk is one of the smallest birds of prey in the UK. It is perfectly adapted to hunt in small spaces and is a common visitor to household gardens, where it preys on songbirds such as thrushes, sparrows and wrens. They will occasionally eat bats.
In this fascinating clip, we meet a sparrowhawk on the hunt for dinner. Because this raptor isn’t built for pursuit or the long chase, it must use stealth and explosive acceleration to catch its prey.
