dictionary skills: agama lizard
Clip Description
There are 37 different species of agama lizard living in Africa. These scaly reptiles are characterised by their long tails and an appetite for insects. They come in a variety of colours, which may differ between species, gender and even according to their mood. For example, when a dominant male asserts his authority over a subordinate male, his body may turn blue and his head bright red or yellow. Such striking colours give rise to their alternative name – ‘rainbow lizards.’
In this fascinating clip, we will see a male agama attempting to catch flies by flicking out his long, sticky tongue. However, this is a risky business as the flies are on the faces and backs of a pride of sleeping lions. To be within striking distance, he must hold his nerve and get as close as possible. Will he wake the lions from their slumber? Will he get his fill unscathed? Watch the clip to find out.
