Clip Description
Sadly, the two-horned Sumatran rhino is the world’s most endangered rhino species with fewer than 80 remaining in the wild. They are also the smallest of the world’s five rhinoceros species. Like all other rhinos, Sumatran rhinos have a keen sense of smell and excellent hearing. Much of their day is spent wallowing in ponds and muddy pools. They do this to cool down and to prevent their skin, which is covered in patches of short, dark, stiff hair, from cracking in the baking sun.
In this fascinating clip, we learn about the work of a Sumatran rhino sanctuary, which is dedicated to saving the species from extinction. Despite the difficulties of keeping and breeding these rhinos in captivity, we learn about the successful birth of two rhino calves – Andatu and Delilah. What are the reasons behind the sanctuary’s success? Watch the clip to find out.
