Clip Description

King penguins are fantastic role models as parents. Both parents care for their chicks, feeding them with fish from their stomach for up to 14 months – longer than any other penguin! The conditions in Antarctica are often extreme; however, with four layers of feathers, these hardy avians are well-adapted to surviving in this harsh environment.

In this fascinating clip, we see the king penguin’s behaviour up close through the eyes of ‘Spy Chick’ – a robot in disguise as a baby penguin. Danger lurks around every corner in the Antarctic and, while Spy Chick is attacked by an inquisitive sheathbill, the real chicks face something much more sinister in a giant chick-eating petrel.
