Modal verbs: hawksbill turtle
Clip Description
The hawksbill turtle is easily distinguished from other species of turtle by its sharp, curving, beak-like jaw, which it uses to get food from inside narrow crevices in coral reefs. Incredibly, the shell of a hawksbill can change colour depending on the temperature of the water.
In this fascinating film clip, we learn about the important work of the Barbados Sea Turtle Project, whose members are dedicated to saving the lives of hawksbill turtle hatchlings. Sadly, many hatchlings never reach adulthood. This is because, as soon as they leave their sandy burrows, they are disorientated by the bright lights of coastal towns and, instead of heading out to sea, they head inland. What do you think will happen to a hatchling once it heads inland? Watch the clip to find out.
