Clip Description
There are nine different species of devil ray. The giant devil ray can grow to over 5 metres in diameter. They get their name from the special fins on their faces, which they use to push zooplankton (tiny marine animals) into their mouths. When they are not feeding, the fins curl and point downwards, looking like the horns of a devil. However, there is nothing to fear from these gentle giants!
In this fascinating clip, Gordon Buchanan attaches a trailing camera to a devil ray. The camera captures incredible footage of a squadron of devil rays gliding through the ocean. Watching from a distance on a computer, Gordon and researcher Jorge Fontes observe something that has never been filmed before. What do you think this is? Watch the clip to find out.
