Clip Description
Manatees (sometimes called sea cows) are large aquatic mammals that are distantly related to elephants. These gentle, slow-moving giants spend most of their lives at or near the water’s surface. In the coastal regions of Florida, manatees swim inland during the winter months to find the hot springs that give them the warmth that they need to survive.
In this fascinating clip, we learn how Florida’s manatee population once faced the prospect of disappearing forever. Collisions with motor boats navigating the same channels were the cause of many manatee deaths. However, local residents and conservationists were determined to protect the manatees and there is now a healthy population of over 8,000 individuals visiting the sunshine state each year. What do you think was done to protect these magnificent creatures? Watch the clip to find out.
