Coconut crabs are the largest land-living crabs in the world. They are native to the southwest Pacific and Indian oceans and are often known as ‘robber crabs’ for their tendency to take things from other animals. Astonishingly, the name ‘coconut crab’ derives from their amazing ability to crack open coconuts using their huge and powerful pincers.
In this fascinating clip, we travel to Christmas Island to meet the crazy coconut crabs who have *kleptomaniac tendencies. Watch as they invade people’s gardens and take anything that isn’t tied down including flip flops, hats and even a camera. Will they get away with it? Watch the clip to find out.
