Their minute size, brilliant iridescent colours and ability to hover, fly backwards, sideways and even upside down make hummingbirds truly remarkable birds and unique among the avian world. Whilst there are over 350 known hummingbird species, new species are being discovered every year. The name, ‘hummingbird’, comes from the humming noise their wings make as they beat so fast.
In this fascinating clip, in the cloud forests of Ecuador, we see the various techniques that hummingbirds use to get to the nectar that they need to fuel their tiny bodies. With flowering plants producing only small amounts of nectar each day, how far will the hummingbirds be prepared to go to get to this sugary treat? Which crimes will be committed?
