Prepositions: sea otter
The Grammar Bit!
Read the three sentences opposite. They each contain a preposition (bold). Prepositions are special words (or phrases) that show relationships between things, people or events.
In the first sentence, the preposition ‘on’ tells us where the sea otters are in relation to the surface of the sea. Other place prepositions include among, beneath, in front of, inside, below and above.
The second sentence uses the prepositions ‘after’ and ‘before’ to tell us the time relationship between three events: the chunk of ice falling; the otters finding the patch of kelp; and the wave rolling by. Other prepositions for time include during, in and at.
The final sentence includes the preposition ‘towards’ to tell us the direction of the wave compared with where the mother and pup otters are. Around, through, and between are other direction prepositions.
