Extending sentences with when, if, because, although: mandarin duck

Read the sentences opposite. The words highlighted in bold are conjunctions.These special ‘gluey’ words are used to connect two clauses together.
You’ll notice that for sentences 1B, 2B and 3B, a conjunction has been used to create a single sentence from two separate sentences (or main clauses).
You may have noticed that these gluey words can appear at the beginning or in the middle of a sentence. With your talk partner, explore reading each sentence aloud with the conjunction in a different place.
Scintillating Sentences
1A) The mandarin duck nests in trees. Most ducks make their nests near water.
1B) The mandarin duck nests in trees, although other ducks make their nests near water.
2A) It’s spring in the forest. The baby mandarin ducks hatch from their delicate eggs.
2B) When it’s spring in the forest, the baby mandarin ducks hatch from their delicate eggs.
3A) The day-old ducklings must follow their mother. They want to survive.
3B) The day-old ducklings must follow their mother if they want to survive.
