Fire ants are named after their painful, burning sting. They are incredibly strong and able to carry things that are ten times heavier than their own body weight. These well-organised insects have an amazing ability to work together for the common good of their entire colony.
In this fascinating clip, fire ants must evacuate their flooded nest, deep in a Peruvian rainforest. Incredibly, they manage to escape unharmed, with their precious queen and larvae, by forming a raft with their own bodies. Why does the living raft stay afloat? Watch the clip to find out.
