Demarcating sentences: scarlet macaw
The Grammar Bit!
Read the scintillating sentences opposite. They show the four main types of sentences and the punctuation used to complete them.
- A statement gives information and normally finishes with a full stop.
- A question is often a request for information and always finishes with a question mark.
- A command tells someone to do something and finishes with either a full stop or an exclamation.
- An exclamation expresses a strong emotion or a surprise and always finishes with an exclamation mark.
In every type of sentence, notice how a capital letter is used to start the first word. With your talk partner, read the sentences opposite again and agree on their sentence type.

2) How can we ensure that these birds increase in population?
3) Stop illegally trapping macaws to sell them as pets!
