Demarcating sentences: bison
The Grammar Bit!
Read the scintillating sentences opposite. They show the four main types of sentences and the punctuation used to complete them.
- A statement gives information and normally finishes with a full stop.
- A question is often a request for information and always finishes with a question mark.
- A command tells someone to do something and finishes with either a full stop or an exclamation.
- An exclamation expresses a strong emotion or a surprise and always finishes with an exclamation mark.
In every type of sentence, notice how a capital letter is used to start the first word. With your talk partner, read the sentences opposite again and agree on their sentence type.
Scintillating Sentences
1) Bison are herbivores, feeding on the grasses of the prairie land all year round.
2) You must keep a safe distance from the bison when it is the rutting season.
3) Why do bison graze in the mornings and evenings yet rest in the daytime?
4) There is an unruly bison on the loose!
