Forthcoming changes to the Natural Curriculum

From April, users will be required to register for the Natural Curriculum through the ERA website. Registration is quick and easy and use of the resource will continue to be free.

Why have we done this?

The Natural Curriculum is a teaching resource designed for use in the classroom. At the heart of the resource lie BBC Natural History video clips, intended to be watched at the start of each lesson. Broadcast recordings watched in schools for educational purposes – including the Natural Curriculum video clips – are covered by an ERA Licence.

By introducing registration, ERA can ensure that all users are covered by an ERA Licence. If you are not covered by an ERA Licence (e.g home educators or private tutors) you will not be able to register, but you will still be able to access the lesson content without the use of the video clips.

What is the ERA Licence?

The ERA Licence covers the use of broadcast recordings in schools across the UK. 98% of schools in the UK are licensed and all English state schools are automatically covered under a blanket agreement with the DfE. Teaching staff from licensed establishments gain free access to ERA’s Video Streaming Platform and the Natural Curriculum.

What is the ERA Video Streaming Platform?

The Video Streaming Platform is a content archive featuring over 8000 TV & radio clips and programmes that can be used in teaching and learning. Programmes have been aligned to the National Curriculum, making it easy to find a suitable video for teaching a range of topics across the curriculum.

Teachers also gain access to the BBC Shakespeare and BBC Literary Archives, which include content aimed at primary aged pupils.

  • Opportunity to shape and improve the Natural Curriculum and wider ERA resources in the future.

By registering, you’ll be joining thousands of teachers across the UK already using our resources and making the most of the ERA Licence.
