About the Morning Starters

Engaging Morning Starters for Year 6

The Natural Curriculum’s morning starters for Year 6 are organised into weekly themes that highlight aspects of the natural world and explore how humans interact with it.

A Knowledge-Rich, Interconnected Curriculum

At the Natural Curriculum, we strongly believe in a knowledge-rich, interconnected approach to education. The weekly themes have been carefully selected to reinforce key concepts and ideas from the National Curriculum’s Science and Geography programmes of study. Meanwhile, the starter challenges focus on specific spelling, grammar, punctuation and mathematical skills, aligned with the attainment targets in the English and Mathematics programmes of study.

How to Use the Morning Starters

Each starter begins with students reading the “Did You Know?” paragraph. The accompanying BBC video clip can be watched either before or after students complete the short word, grammar, number and critical thinking challenges.

David Millington, a primary school teacher and creator of the Natural Curriculum, explains how he has successfully used the morning starters with his Year 6 class.
